About this Event

Calgary Humane Society Winter Break Camp (CBE & CCSD): December 29th - 31st

Calgary Humane Society Winter Camp is a place where kids connect with animals. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children to interact and learn about the animals that share our world. An enthusiastic staff of instructors and friendly animals gives your child an enriching experience filled with hands-on animal encounters, fun activities, and crafts. As they have fun, campers learn respect, compassion, and how to provide a lifetime of care for animals.

Campers will learn about animal characteristics, behavior, and proper pet care as well as meet and possibly pet bunnies, cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, and more! Activities are age and developmentally appropriate.

After-care (until 4:30pm) can be added for an additional $50.00 fee upon checkout. We do not offer before-care at this time.

Pre-Registration Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the cost?

Calgary Humane Winter Break day camp is $210.00, for 3 days of fun and excitement!

If you would like to make a donation to our camp subsidy fund, you may include it with your registration. This fund provides a camp opportunity for children from lower-income families.

Cancellation Policy: Camp fees are non-refundable however fees may be transferable. Please contact the Humane Education Department if your child is registered in camp but unable to attend.

May my child attend if they have allergies?

If your child’s allergies are minor, controlled by Medic*tion and you’ve consulted your child’s physician, please sign up! Children will be spending limited amounts of time in the animal areas in the shelter and as much time outside as weather permits. Please consult our full FAQ page for more info about peanuts and food allergies.

Where does the camp take place?

Camp takes place at the Calgary Humane Society – 4455 110 Ave SE, Calgary, Alberta

How is the camp organized?

Camp will be led by a specially trained educator and assistants. Children in grades 1-6 will all be placed in the same group.

All children will need to bring a lunch as well as 2 light snacks and a bottle of water to camp each day. Children will be provided with the opportunity to eat a small snack or enjoy a drink at both mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If your child’s medical condition requires them to eat or drink at certain times please alert our camp staff prior to your child’s camp.

The Calgary Humane Society is NOT a peanut-free facility however we do request that parents avoid packing peanut products for the safety of all of our campers. Please also bring appropriate clothing for the weather and closed-toed shoes.

Will my child spend most of the day with animals?

Everything we do at camp is aimed at teaching children about animal care, handling, and welfare. We strive to give our campers an opportunity to interact with several animals each day. However, we are an open-admissions animal shelter which cares for all animals, including some that may be sick, injured, and sometimes aggressive. Our ability to have kids interact with animals relies entirely on the types of animals who are in residence during the camp season. Our two top priorities are to provide our campers with a safe experience and to prevent our resident animals from any undue stress. Some animals simply cannot handle the attention of a large group of children at a time, and we endeavor to teach the children to respect the needs of each individual animal. That being said, when a gentle bunny, kid-loving dog, or playful bunch of kittens comes through the shelter, the camp kids are definitely given the opportunity to interact with them. In addition, activities like dog training and animal socializing with guest animal ambassadors are the highlight of the week for many of our campers.

Please note: Activities are age-specific. Animal interaction is dependent upon animal health on a day-to-day basis. We cannot guarantee specified types or amount of animal visits.
