About this Event
Among all positions in all sports, coxing is unique: you’re an on-board player-coach with a set of tasks and challenges completely different from your teammates’. You have to understand psychology, physiology, rowing technique, navigation, and make instant decisions that can affect the outcome of all the work your teammates have put into training. No wonder coxing is difficult to learn—and to coach.
That’s why the coxswains of CBC, including former World Champions and Olympic Gold medalists, and winners of races of every kind, have created a one-day clinic meant to put coxing in the limelight and elevate the skills of novice and experienced coxswains and their coaches.
Presenters will include an Olympic gold medalist, a Paraolympic silver medalist, a World champion, and a U23 World champion. Special guest speaker will be a USRowing race official.
While coxing can’t be learned in a day, the clinic will cover the full range of the role. Multiple, simultaneous sessions will be presented in smaller groups and attendees can choose which sessions to attend based on their interests. A special session for coaches will also be offered.
Just some of the topics include:
- Boat handling and safety
- Rowing technique from the coxswain’s seat
- Why coxes should row too
- Cox as a leader
- Race tactics
- Using data & tech to go faster
While the outside speakers may be compensated, all of the coxswains are donating their time, and the cost of the day is for food and overhead only.
Need based scholarships are available upon application. To apply please email [email protected] with your name, program name (if any) and an explanation of your need.
