Wine Tasting Notes 8/9/22: A Tour of Italy – Tuscany, Sicily, and Puglia.
1) Cantina del Morellino Cala Civetta Vermentino – 2020 – Tuscany, Italy.
100% Vermentino. Unoaked. Lush in terms of body, but clean and zesty on the palate, this Vermentino performs the way you’d expect when well-made near the Tuscan coastline. While there are hints of minerality, the story of the wine revolves around its ample mouthfeel, warm climate, and low yield fruit. Cantina del Morellino is a true co-op, with farmers owning an average of under 5 acres and doing everything by hand. Perfect anytime of year in lieu of Pinot Grigio, or for that matter, even an unoaked Chardonnay.
2) Tasca Conti d’Almerita Regaleali Nero d'Avola – 2017 – Sicily, Italy.
100% Nero d’Avola. Aged 6 months, 50% in stainless steel, 50% in large Slavonian oak barrels. This is one of the first wines produced at the estate and has represented the territory and Nero d’Avola for the past 63 years. Elegant with the perfect balance between austerity and fullness. With a bright ruby-red color, this wine offers layered notes of cherry, mulberry & raspberry and culinary spice. On the palate, it is juicy & delicious, complex & supple, doling out succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry and star anise, while silky tannins offer smooth support. A delicious Sicilian red at a great value! 90 points – Wine Enthusiast.
3) Palama Metiusco Anniversario Salento – 2019 – Puglia, Italy. 100% Negroamaro. Aged in neutral Slovenian barrels for 12 months. Benefitting from the Salento’s sun-drenched Mediterranean climate and warm terra rosa soil, this Negroamaro is ripe, bold, and (almost) international in style. While it spends a full year in largely neutral barrels, the focus remains fully on the fruit, harvested just a touch later for this wine. Behind it all however, a spine of earthiness hints at the old, dry-farmed vines and the region’s dusty Italian terroir.
