Wine Tasting Class: In the Vineyard - Understanding Wine from the Ground Up
About this Event
In the Vineyard: From Vine to Glass
An Advanced Wine Education Experience with Advanced Sommelier Jen Schmitt
Every great wine begins long before the grapes are harvested.
Join Advanced Sommelier Jen Schmitt for an immersive educational experience as we explore the complete journey of wine from vineyard to glass. This class focuses on the growing season, the vineyard decisions, and the farming practices that ultimately shape the wines we enjoy.
Rather than focusing solely on what's in the glass, we'll examine what happens before the wine is ever made. From the first signs of life in the vineyard to the moment grapes are harvested, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how nature, farming, and human decisions influence every bottle.
During this class, Jen will guide you through(subject to change):
🥂 Celebrate Life with Sparkling Wine
We'll begin the evening with a sparkling wine toast as we kick off our journey through the vineyard.
🍇 The Life Cycle of the Vine
Follow the vine through its annual cycle—from dormancy and bud break to flowering, fruit set, veraison, ripening, and harvest. Learn how each stage impacts grape quality and influences the final wine.
🌋 The Role of Soil
Explore how different soil types affect water retention, root development, vine health, and grape ripening. We'll compare wines from contrasting soil types to experience firsthand how the vineyard's foundation can shape the finished product.
🌿 Vine Training & Vineyard Management
Discover why vineyard rows look different around the world and how canopy management, sunlight exposure, airflow, and vine training systems play a critical role in grape development.
🌱 Farming Philosophies
Learn the differences between sustainable, organic, and biodynamic farming practices and how these approaches impact both the vineyard ecosystem and the wines produced from it.
🍷 From Vineyard to Glass
Throughout the evening, Jen will connect each vineyard decision to its impact on the finished wine, helping you understand how growing conditions, farming choices, and harvest decisions influence aroma, flavor, texture, and quality.
Fair warning: Jen may need to invest in a lab coat for this one.
This class dives deeper into the science and art of grape growing than any class we've offered before. While some topics can become highly technical, Jen's goal is to strike the perfect balance between serious wine education and an enjoyable evening of tasting and discussion.
Because of the depth of the material, this experience may extend closer to two hours as we follow the fascinating journey of wine from vineyard to glass.
Perfect for curious wine lovers, aspiring wine students, and anyone who has ever wondered what really happens before the wine reaches their glass.
We ask you arrive on time and be ready to learn! Questions are strongly encouraged, don't be shy!
