We are beyond excited to announce a night of immersive ambient, experimental sound, dream music, and electronic music with one of our all-time favorite groups and legends of the genre, Windy & Carl. With special opening sets by Zelienople and DJ Karl Meier.
Windy & Carl
Windy and Carl have spent 30 years creating mostly instrumental cinematic compositions. Primarily using guitars, their long form ambient pieces sit alongside forays into dreampop and shoegaze. Signing to kranky in 1998, the group amassed a large body of work and toured in the USA and Europe, performing alongside such luminaries as the Silver Apples, Tony Conrad and Terry Riley. Cited as “the leading light of the space rock scene” in the mid nineties, Boomkat had this to say about the recent reissue of Consciousness: Sublime, near-cosmic ambience that's struck through with airy drift motifs; a foundational, crucial listen if you're into Roy Montgomery, Loren Connors, Stars of the Lid, Durutti. It's a reminder of just how much influence the duo exerted on contemporary drift music, and there is still no one else that does it quite that way. Pitchfork has them included in lists for both the 50 best ambient and 50 best shoegaze LPs of all time. While Windy and Carl took a hiatus from live performance for much of the past decade, they have returned to the stage for select dates in 2025 and 2026.
Zelienople
Zelienople is Matt Christensen, Brian Harding, Mike Weis, and P.M. Tummala.
The members of Zelienople met in an old building in Chicago, above an antique shop, where former doctors' offices had been converted into music rehearsal spaces. The full, resonant sound of Matt Christensen and Brian Harding caught the interest of percussionist Mike Weis, who was renting space down the hall. The three started playing together as Zelienople in the late 90s. Early shows were alongside performance artists in loft spaces and later at the legendary Lounge Ax and Empty Bottle clubs. The trio wrote new music for each live set before eventually settling on an album’s worth of material to record their debut. Pajama Avenue was released in 2002 on Chicago’s Loosethread Recordings, run by musician/producer P.M. Tummala. Loosethread released the follow-ups Sleeper Coach and Ink before Zelienople moved on to other labels, including San Francisco’s Root Strata for Stone Academy; Manchester’s Type for His/Hers, Give It Up, and The World is a House on Fire; and Miasmah from Berlin for 2020’s Hold You Up. Four years later, Zelienople, now expanded to a quartet with P.M. Tummala on keyboards, synths, and vibraphone, released Everything is Simple on France’s Shelter Press last summer. Their new album Everything is Simple is out now on Shelter.
DJ Karl Meier
A life-long devotee of electronic and experimental music, Karl P. Meier discovered Chicago House and Detroit Techno in the early nineties. Determined to show that dance music could be a serious artform and more than escapist fare, he developed a DJing style, opening for artists such as Surgeon, Monolake, and Jeff Mills, that looks to the future while being influenced by the music of the past. His sets explore the space between movement and thought while focusing on dynamism, contrast, and recontextualization. Karl's current project, a collaboration with Jonathan "Stave" Krohn under the name Talker, appears on the esteemed Downwards imprint. In addition to 2 releases for that label, remixes have appeared on labels such as Eye Teeth, Horizontal Ground, and Kathexis.
