Event Description:
The journey to forming an equitable and just society is one paved with political and social challenges, many of which we’ve been facing for generations. As we continue to fight for racial and queer justice, join us for a history lesson on the intersection of the civil rights and LGBTQ movements at our film screenings of “From Selma to Stonewall”!
Featuring Rev. Gil Caldwell, a black, straight preacher and Civil Rights Movement foot soldier, and Marilyn Bennett, a white, lesbian author and activist who form an unusual bond as they seek to find the intersection between the Civil Rights and LGBTQ+ Equality movements. They start out exploring the similarities, differences, and conflicts between the two movements and find themselves in the midst of today’s struggles—hate crimes, anti-blackness, police brutality, anti-LGBTQ religious hostility, queer youth homelessness, and white supremacy.
The screenings will be followed by facilitated discussions, where you’ll be able to talk with your fellow watchers about the themes of the film and what it means for our present and future.
