It's back for 2024! Join Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr., Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of History at UNC Wilmington, for a twist on our popular Dark History Tours. He will lead a two hour walking tour called "Curious Tales From Old Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear: The Truth Behind the Legends" in historic downtown Wilmington at 7:00 on Saturday, October 26. Dr. Fonvielle literally wrote the popular book by that name in 2021, and its recently released sequel, More Curious Tales. In the spirit of Halloween, Dr. Fonvielle will explore some of the city and region’s fascinating legends and the real story behind them. Was Samuel R. Jocelyn Jr. really buried alive in the graveyard at St. James Episcopal Church after being killed in a horseback riding accident in 1810? What was the Maco Light that thousands of people, including Dr. Fonvielle, witnessed at the site of a tragic train accident that reportedly killed and decapitated conductor Joe Baldwin, whose spirit tried desperately to find its severed head over the next 100 years? See the site of an infamous duel between two native Wilmingtonians in 1781, and Gallow’s Hill where public executions took place in colonial times. More stories to hear and more sites to see. “A splendid time is guaranteed for all!”
With this tour coming at the height of Spooky Season, tickets will move quickly!
