Learn how to make small swift and swallow sculptures out of basket willow, and take home your makes. In this hands-on workshop you will learn various willow weaving techniques, making swift and swallow sculptured shapes out of basket willow, which you can take home.
This workshop will be led by Ruth Thompson, a willow and greenwood artist from Northumberland. Ruth champions the use of willow weaving not only as a fun and practical heritage skill, but also as a mental wellbeing exercise. People working with willow find the process grounding and deeply relaxing as it not only engages their hands but also their minds, rooting them in the current moment. Ruth had the chance to discuss the benefits of willow weaving and mental wellbeing with Robson Green in the 2nd season of his show, Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes. (The episode was first aired on New Year’s Day 2024 on BBC2 and can be viewed on iPlayer now.)
