On May 5, 1862, elements of the Army of the Potomac deployed in driving rain near Fort Magruder, at Williamsburg, VA. Union cavalry, artillery, and infantry pushed Confederate skirmishers into their fortifications. As the battle intensified through the day, several Confederate units countermarched to aid Confederate General Longstreet commanding the rear guard. By mid-morning, the New Jersey Brigade under command of General Francis Patterson turned off Hampton Road and charged into the ravine to meet the Confederate troops. To commemorate the heroic courage of the New Jersey men, the Old Baldy Civil War Roundtable has worked with the Civil War Trails organization to install an interpretive sign in their honor. On the anniversary of the Battle of Williamsburg we will be traveling to the site for the dedication ceremony.
