About this Event
Remarkably it is Edinburgh that can lay claim to having been home to the first Chinese man to settle, work and marry in Britain. Before William Macao came to Scotland only four Chinese people had visited Britain and none stayed, whereas he made his home here, from the mid-1770s until his death in 1831. This talk will recount his fascinating life, including the remarkable fact that he is the only person to have been legally deemed to have Scottish nationality since the Act of Union.
Please join us at Central Library to hear more of this fascinating story from Barclay Price author of 'The Chinese in Britain: A History of Visitors and Settlers'.
This talk is planned as part of our programme to coincide with the British Library's Chinese and British exhibition https://www.bl.uk/events/chinese-and-british
There will be an art exhibition and historically significant material on display at the time of this event.
