What makes the WildWoods a Special Place?
About this Event

A Tangible Legacy. History, geology, ecology, ecosystem services, Sense of place, opportunities.

Is it the Green Survival Program? Or the Afforestation Vision by City Planner Bert Wellman? What is the value of species at risk, trees, and wetlands? What is the Natural Capital Asset Valuation? What is known about the West Swale, and the Yorath Island Glacial Spillway? How does the Old Bone Trail fit in? Do the namesakes make the areas a special place? Or is it the spiritual and cultural significance of place? What is community place-making for you?

The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA), 132 ha in size, was planted in 1972 under the Green Survival Program, and preserved in perpetuity by Saskatoon City Council a few years later. The Green Survival Campaign spread across North America with the message that "each individual can have a positive, meaningful effect on the quality of life by planting trees and other living plants."

“World afforestation is necessary because it is the most constructive and peaceable enterprise in which the nations could co-operate," Dr. Baker wrote in 1949…"It would check, stop, and reverse the advance of the deserts upon the good lands of the globe, and thus relieve the shortage of foods” (One Country, 1994)

This heritage community film Wildwoods of Saskatoon is free with a general admission into the Remai Modern.
