About this Event
As an extension of the gallery exhibit, Coping Behind the Mask, we step outside the gallery walls and into the nature preserve with Autumn and learn to ask questions, keep track of observations, record moments, create images, and reconnect with nature and ourselves through this nature journaling workshop.
" Many of us today suffer from issues relating to mental health and know the challenges of living with an invisible disorder. I have found that creating safe spaces for nature exploration and journaling has a hugely beneficial effect, and may also help connect those of us who so often suffer in silence due to fear of stigma or embarrassment."
" I believe we can all truly discover our sense of place and connection to nature through the power of art, observation and the practice of justice across all barriers, including species. Together we will prove that not only can we all be artists and environmental stewards, but that we can make a difference and create a better future for every organism with which we share our tiny blue planet." Autumn Kioti
The City of Pembroke Pines oversees this 450-acre passive park that was established in the 1990s. The wetlands have become home to 120 species of birds, deer, marsh rabbits, alligators, snakes, turtles, largemouth bass, and insects. This nature preserve includes a 1,650-foot long boardwalk, and a pavilion for observation.
Please bring a small journal or sketchbook, a pencil, and your preferred easily portable art materials of choice, ie, markers, colored pencils, brush pens, etc. Autumn's preference is a 6x9" dry & wet media semi-hardcover sketchbook, unlined, which you can find at most art supply stores, a mechanical pencil, black micron pens, colored brush pens, or a travel watercolor kit, but feel free to use what feels right for you, or experiment with something new!
