About this Event

Center for Large Landscape Conservation and Country Bookshelf are proud to present Bridging the Future: Wildlife Crossings with author Ben Goldfarb.

This tour of bookstores and other local venues will feature readings by Ben from his most recent book , a scientific and literary feat, highlighting the impact of the 40 million miles of roadways that encircle our planet. For wildlife and ecosystems, roads are forces of disruption and at times causes of death.

Please join us to learn about the issue and how emerging science can reduce and potentially reverse the damage caused. The readings will be followed by Q&As with Ben and experts in conservation and wildlife crossings from the Center and local partners.

From the publisher:

From remote Tasmania to the interstate bisecting Syracuse, New York, Goldfarb reports from the frontlines of an ecological and cultural revolution, one that views roads as potential visitors, not conquerors… A sweeping, spirited, and timely investigation into how humans have altered the natural world, CROSSINGS shows us how to create a better future for all living beings."

Ben Goldfarb is an environmental journalist whose work has appeared in National Geographic, the Atlantic, Smithsonian Magazine, and many other publications. He is the author of Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, named one of the best books of 2023 by the New York Times, and Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, winner of the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. He lives in Colorado with his wife, Elise, and his dog, Kit — which is, of course, what you call a baby beaver.

The Center For Large Landscape Conservation is a Montana-based nonprofit that works both locally and globally to promote ecological connectivity, support healthy wildlife habitats, and safeguard nature’s resilience to climate change.

As a Road Ecologist at the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, Liz Fairbank focuses on improving habitat connectivity and reducing the negative impacts of roads on wildlife and ecosystems. She has contributed to numerous road ecology research projects in the western United States, including on animal-vehicle conflict in Northwest Montana and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, ungulate migration routes in Wyoming, and effects of roads on desert tortoises in the Southwest.

Rob Ament serves as Senior Conservationist at the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, where he leads its international program’s science and policy efforts to advance wildlife corridors and ecological connectivity. His particular expertise seeks to address linear infrastructure, such as roads and railways, which create barriers to wildlife movement. He co-chairs the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN’s) Transport Working Group and its Asian Elephant Transport Working Group.
