OUR AWESOME PANEL:

MADDIE BRIGHT: Executive Director of Earth Sangha where she has worked full-time on native plant conservation since 2011, and where she grew up as the daughter of co-founders Lisa and Chris Bright. Maddie has worked closely with ecologists, botanists, and park managers across the Northern Virginia region on plant conservation and ecological restoration projects over the years, including a brief stint interning at Huntley Meadows Park. She regularly teaches for the Arlington Regional Master Naturalist chapter and serves on the steering committee for the National Capitol Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management.

LIZ TRAIN: Co-Coordinator of the Audubon at Home Program for Fairfax County and is also an Audubon at Home Ambassador. Liz is a certified Virginia Master Naturalist (Fairfax Chapter) and a certified Virginia Extension Master Gardener (Fairfax- Green Spring Gardens Unit). She is an active volunteer in northern Virginia, supporting numerous educational and stewardship programs for Fairfax County Park Authority, Fairfax County Public Schools, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, and the annual USGS Breeding Bird Survey. Liz leads two Virginia Master Naturalist training cohorts annually as co-chair of the training committee for the Fairfax Master Naturalists and additionally actively participates in the annual training of Extension Master Gardeners.

Liz’s motivation to be involved in environmental work is grounded in her belief that we all play a critical role in mitigating the effects of climate change, that no measure is too small, and understanding the basic principles of what it takes to create a healthy habitat for wildlife is an important tool for every homeowner. Improving our Chesapeake Bay watershed water, soil and air quality and increasing biodiversity are central to the work Liz does. Liz resides in Fairfax County.

CORY SUTER: Permaculture farmer, community leader, and advocate for soil regeneration. Raised on a Mennonite homestead and trained in doctoral level Economics, he is a Fairfax County Tree Commissioner, and the Founder of LambMowers.com, a small business featured in the Washington Post that brings a friendly flock of sheep to over 140 different yards per year all around the DC metropolitan area to provide chemical free fertilizer, W**d removal, and carbon sequestration services.

An experienced entrepreneur, Cory was a founding board member of the Philadelphia Orchard Project, a non-profit that has planted over 1650 fruit trees and 55 food forests. In 2006, Cory founded the second largest residential green roofing company in the Philadelphia area as of 2011. That year he sold BioNeighbors Sustainable Homes, LLC to a competitor to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at Temple University. After earning a Masters, Cory bought an old horse farm in Fairfax, VA with his wife where he now raises chickens, Babydoll Southdown Sheep and over 200 cultivars of edible perennial plants. When he's not shepherding and farming, Cory is teaching others about practical ways to care for land; he has designed and planted significant edible landscaping beds in multiple public places including at Daniels Run Peace Church, and James Lee Community Center. While very passionate about protecting nature, Cory believes his most important work is raising his two boys ages nine and thirteen to also care for plants, people and our planet.

MODERATOR:
