About this Event
Wild oyster surveys are an opportunity to get out along the waterfronts of New York City to build collective knowledge about where oysters can live. By becoming a member of our Wild Oyster Watch, you will collect data on oysters that have settled on their own, as opposed to ‘restored’ oysters -- the oysters that Billion Oyster Project and others have put into the water as part of our restoration efforts. When we find these ‘wild’ oysters, we think the conditions may be good for placing ‘restored’ oysters nearby in the same location, which is why the collection of this data is valuable to us.
In order to be trained as a Wild Oyster Watchperson (WOW), participants will watch a one-hour introductory video within the week before the training, and fill out a short assessment to check their newly acquired knowledge. They will then head into the field with Billion Oyster Project staff and other WOWs to conduct a wild oyster survey, learning how to set up a transect, spot and measure wild oysters, and properly collect the data. After this training, participants will be able to conduct their own surveys, reporting data back to Billion Oyster Project’s Community Science team.
