Celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth with Devoney Looser, professor of English at Arizona State University and the author of Wild for Austen: A Rebellious, Subversive, and Untamed Jane (St Martin’s Press, 2025)!
Jane Austen’s books are considered some of the best novels ever published in English, but her reputation as the epitome of propriety and politeness fails to tell the full story. With expertise, authority, warmth, and humor, Looser offers a riveting tour of Austen’s writings, biography, and how she was viewed in her time – from her family’s involvement in the abolition and women’s suffrage movements to early sightings of her ghost and the film adaptations that never were.
Packed with compelling new details that the true Austenphile will find irresistible, Wild for Austen is a welcome reassessment of this iconic creative mind and its place in her society. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Devoney Looser (Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University) is the author of several books, including Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës and The Making of Jane Austen. A Guggenheim Fellow and an NEH Public Scholar, Looser has published essays in The Atlantic, New York Times, Salon, Slate, The TLS, and The Washington Post. She is a life member of the Jane Austen Society of North America and played roller derby under the name Stone Cold Jane Austen.
