Wikicurious: Black Broward on Wikipedia

Wikicurious: Black Broward on Wikipedia is a community editing event on Saturday, June 13 from 12pm - 4pm at the focused on improving Wikipedia’s coverage of Black and Afro-Caribbean history, and Broward County, Florida. Participants will work collaboratively to create, and improve articles related to local history, cultural landmarks, notable individuals, and community institutions across Fort Lauderdale, Historic Liberia, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, and surrounding areas.

This beginner-friendly event welcomes both experienced and newcomers. Participants will receive training on how to edit Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Hosted by Wikimedia NYC, in partnership with Broward County Library, the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), and WikiLatinos, the event will draw from local archives, oral histories, and special collections.

About Wikicurious:

Wikicurious is a beginner-level series that trains participants how to edit and participate on Wikimedia wikis and sites. Wikicurious started in 2024 with events throughout NYC and has since expanded nationally. Wikicurious is supported by Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

We aim to add and enhance Wikipedia articles about topics relevant to Latino culture and heritage, both in English and Spanish. We also aim to build a Latino presence on Wikipedia.

Attendees will need a Wikipedia account to edit pages. Please create your account (in the top right corner) before the event. Please note that Wikipedia usernames are public. It is recommended for you to use a pseudonym or nickname for your username, rather than your real name.
