Wide Open Spaces plays "bluegrass without borders", using bluegrass instrumentation to play a wide range of music, from Kentucky hills to Celtic and Caribbean isles.Wide Open Spaces follows in the tradition of groups like Claire Lynch and the Punch Brothers, who use bluegrass instrumentation to play a wide range of music. Their “bluegrass without borders” will take you to Caribbean islands, California gold country, Celtic ceilidhs and the Kentucky hills.
Combining the traditional sounds of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass with modern song-writing, jazzy rock-edged arrangements and tight three-part harmonies, they take audiences on a musical joy ride that has some people saying: "I can't believe that's bluegrass!"
Anything can happen - and usually does.
The 'Spaces' are comprised of former members of the newgrass stew pot known as Acoustic Planet, the bluegrass wunderkinds The Oakhurst Boys, along with Mud Rocheleau-Demers of the famed acoustic duo, Chuck and Mud. Whether you prefer wild Celtic fiddle reels, rockin' guitar solos, banjos from the far side of a distant galaxy, Beatle-esque and Alison Krauss style harmonies - or original songs sometimes reminiscent of Jimmy Buffet, the Punch Brothers, or Doyle Lawson - come join the Spaces for an evening of good-humored, “spaced”-out musical adventure
