Insults in the Tudor period drew upon a wider vocabulary than that of today. Men were disparaged differently from women and there were words and terms specific to Exeter. The evidence is extraordinarilly extensive and we know more about what was said in the 1500’s and 1600’s than we do for the Victorian period. A lecture not for those easily offended.Dr Todd Gray is an Honorary Research Fellow at Exeter University and the author of more than fifty books on Devon. This lecture is drawn from his Strumpets & Ninnycocks and How to Swear like an Elizabethan in Devon.
