About this Event
Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name? weaves history and comedic insights into stories about names, shedding light on societal prejudices and assumptions.
When Irma Herrera pronounces her name correctly in Spanish, she is often asked, "Where are you really from?" All too often, folks who are identifiably 'ethnic' are NOT considered REAL Americans. Over the past four decades, Irma has dedicated herself to social justice activism, law, and journalism.
In this piece, Irma portrays 20+ characters, including herself at different ages, her parents, teachers — from a parochial school nun to a University of Notre Dame Law School professor — as well as classmates, colleagues, and opposing counsel she has encountered throughout her career. These characters collectively illustrate how names can serve as minefields of misplaced notions, sometimes comical, sad, or demeaning, and which speak volumes about where we stand as a diverse and highly divided nation.
"This is a show for all generations. My teen son, retired mother, and I saw the show together and couldn't stop talking about it. Ms. Herrera invites us to examine racial history in America and our own perceptions in a way that opens conversations through humor and authenticity. ¡Cinco Estrellas!”
~Melinda Martinez, Teacher Training Coordinator Puente Program
"Irma Herrera's exploration of confronting racism on her path as a first-generation professional is moving and revealing. Herrera's decision to give up a career as a leading civil rights lawyer to become a performance artist turns out to have been a shift in method, not message or calling. SEE THIS SHOW!"
~David Oppenheimer, UC Berkeley Clinical Professor of Law"
“Why Would I Mispronounce My Name? is a magnificent piece of art! You hear people say, "Art is Resistance". . . this definitely fits that bill! Irma’s experiences navigating sexism and racism pull you in because they are so relatable . . . Irma brings truth to power. I felt seen and heard!"
