About this Event
Why Marriage Matters
According to new research by the University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox, our kids and communities - not to mention our civilization as a whole - are much more likely to flourish when the state of our unions is strong. Despite this, record numbers of Americans are not succeeding at getting or staying married. Wilcox and his colleagues reveal that the anti-family messages and policies coming out of Hollywood, Washington, the media, academia, and corporate America have weakened marriage.
Professor Brad Wilcox of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia feels a special calling to help married couples and young adults today understand the importance of getting married, and how to succeed in marriage.
Brad is an author, speaker, professor, and marriage champion. He is the professor of Sociology and Director of National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Brad earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, where he was a Jefferson Scholar, and his Ph.D. in sociology at Princeton University. His research focuses on the quality and stability of marriage and family life in the United States and around the globe. Brad is the author and co-editor of five books, and his research is featured regularly in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, NPR, National Review, DeseretNews, and other media outlets.
Brad has a message that will reveal what’s happening to marriage and family life, why these two institutions are losing ground, and what we can do to revive their fortunes in 21st- century America. He will discuss the ways in which religion shapes the quality and stability of American family life, and show why Americans who attend religious services enjoy higher levels of marital quality, and dramatically lower risks of divorce.
Additionally, Brad will reveal the five pillars of strong marriages in 21st-century America, and the three C’s of marriage.
