Why should Canberra adopt the Missing Middle?

Join us for an evening where we discuss this question, in conversation with a panel of Missing Middle Canberra’s supporter organisations, explaining why they joined the call for Missing Middle Canberra’s vision of residential zoning reform.

Missing Middle Canberra called for four major reforms to Canberra's residential zoning laws:

• Upzoning all existing RZ1 (Suburban) areas to RZ2 (Suburban Core) areas, legalising townhouses and terraces in areas currently exclusively reserved for single family detached housing, while also allow ing this low-impact housing to be subject to similar streamlined development approval requirements as existing detached homes.

• Upzoning all existing RZ2 (Suburban Core) areas to RZ3 (Urban Residential) areas, enabling higher densit terraces and low rise apartment blocks within walking distance of local shops.

• Reforming the CZ4 (Local shops) Zone to allow apartments of up to at least 3 storeys above local shops.

• Reducing the minimum amount of parking spaces that have to be provided with each dwelling to 1, from 1.5 to 2 currently. This enables the large number of households with one or no cars to buy dwellings that match their parking need, reducing housing costs and encouraging public and active transport.
