About this Event

William Leidesdorff was one of early San Francisco’s most remarkable figures: a Danish-Caribbean sea captain, merchant, diplomat, town official, and landowner whose life helped shape the city’s transformation of Yerba Buena into San Francisco. Over time stories about him accumulated as fast as the city grew — stories that tell us as much about later generations and their ambitions as they do about Leidesdorff himself.

Join City Guides author Eric Friedman for the launch of his new biography, The Ledger and the Mirror: William Leidesdorff and the Making of San Francisco. Eric will trace Leidesdorff’s remarkable life, separate enduring myth from the evidence, and explore why communities remake founders to reflect contemporary ideals. He’ll also offer practical takeaways for guides on how to recognize and resist present-day projections when telling historical stories.

The event will take place in Room 201. Light refreshments will be served. Guests are welcome.
