Who Is American Today?
Sept 12th-November 21st, 2024
Reed Gallery
UC DAAP Complex, Rm 5275
Exploring contemporary meanings of citizenship through the lens of high school students, this exhibition showcases a seven-year project in which students from four schools created digital stories about what it means to be American today? Connecting creativity and democracy, each student reflected upon their experiences at school and in community to consider their status as citizens. As a viewer, you will be moved by the different points of view, shared values and concerns, range of technical skills and creative approaches, and the potential of digital story telling for elevating young peoples’ voices. By creating and circulating original digital stories, students experienced first-hand how digital making can bring attention to less-known stories, validate perspectives, surpass polarizing issues, and engender shared understandings. This project affirms the role of creative practices in developing skills that are integral for citizenship and documents a connection between digital making and civic engagement.
