Title: Who Do They Think You Are? The Price Of Consumer Genomics & Ancestry Tests

Speaker: John Doran, Science Lecturer & Researcher

The rise of consumer genomics companies like 23andMe and AncestryDNA has been incredible. They have become fundamental to how millions of us now see ourselves and our place in the world. You can learn about your future health risks, be forced to re-examine your family tree, find out you’re predisposed to conditions you’d rather not think about. But the technologies and business models behind ancestry and health testing are, in many ways, very scary. The regulatory gaps are huge and leave the sector wide open to bad incentives. Many of these companies have fallen on hard times and now they need to get creative about how to flip a profit... and the one thing they have at their disposal, is your genetic data.

Key takeaways:

  • How do consumer facing DNA sequencing work
  • What do they know about us and what do they simply choose not to know?
  • How are these companies profiting from sensitive genomic data?
