Whittling in Endgrained: Workshop with Courtney Petley

This 2-hour relaxed, hands on session will be an introduction to carving with a straight knife.

Working with small lengths of timber, participants will learn how to read the grain and use a range of simple cuts to shape the wood by hand.

More exploratory than outcome-driven, it feels like a fitting complement to Endgrained – a chance to spend time with timber in a direct and tactile way, and to understand grain not just visually, but through the hand.

This workshop is aimed at beginners but can be tailored to suit those with more experience. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12+.

Courtney Petley is a self-taught woodworker living in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. For over 10 years Courtney has worked with reclaimed native timber to create utensils for your kitchen and objects for your home, all carved by hand. Courtney is also passionate about teaching, and sharing the skill of spoon carving and runs other classes from her Cross St workshop.
