At WHINEFIRE – Carnival Soca Dance & Workshop, we believe movement should be enjoyable, inclusive, and accessible. Whether you're looking to improve your fitness, support your wellbeing, meet new people, or simply have fun, this workshop offers an opportunity to move your body, celebrate Caribbean culture, and feel good from the inside out.
Why Is It Spelt "Whining" and Not "Wineing"?
In Trinidad and Tobago, the dance movement is traditionally spelt "whining" (sometimes written as "wining") rather than "wineing."
The term comes from Caribbean English and Creole language traditions, where "to wine" means to rotate or roll the waist and hips rhythmically to music. Over time, the pronunciation of the word "wine" in Trinidad and Tobago became associated with the dance movement itself.
The spelling "whining" became popular because it reflects how the word sounds when spoken in Caribbean dialects and has been widely adopted in Soca, Calypso, Dancehall, Carnival culture, music lyrics, and popular media throughout the Caribbean and diaspora communities.
Importantly, in the context of Caribbean dance, "whining" has nothing to do with complaining or grumbling, which is the standard English meaning of the word. Instead, it refers to a celebrated cultural dance movement rooted in African traditions and developed through generations of Caribbean Carnival culture.
Today, both "whining" and "wining" are commonly used, but "whining" is often recognised internationally as the most familiar spelling when describing the iconic waistline movement associated with Soca music and Carnival.
At WHINEFIRE, whining is celebrated as a form of movement, self-expression, confidence, cultural heritage, and community connection.
