Hello, Stranger
Thursday, July 23 · 6:30–9:00 PM
Blank Space, Asheville
Closed doors · Donation-based · 30 Person Cap
Once people are in a room together, connection simply happens, right?
That, stranger, is a lazy assumption.
Hello, Stranger is built on a different premise: not only *should* we design for connection, we can transform strangers into co-conspirators in a single night.
Through a multi-modal approach informed by everything from Authentic Relating and parts work to military training, improvisation, immersive theater, and the time honored tradition of a little well-placed mischief, we turn a room of unfamiliar people into a temporary world worth inhabiting.
Expect social experiments, games, nonverbal encounters, whimsical items, shared challenges, and unexpected conversations.
We don't manufacture instant best friends or volunteer you into service at the Vulnerability Olympics™. Instead, we elevate the small, uncommon acts that make belonging possible: attention, curiosity, courage, generosity, and the willingness to make something utterly bizarre with people you have only just met.
Whimsy Lab is the new creation of Sara Ness and Geof Krum. Sara is a co-founder of the Authentic Relating movement. Geof is Program Director for the immersive theatre company Kedesha. Together, they have designed and facilitated experiences at the intersection of connection, theater, ritual, play, and participatory social design for communities, organizations, and private clients around the world.
Whimsy Lab is a test kitchen for ambitious, playful, occasionally impractical ideas about what gatherings can do. It is a place to stretch the edges of immersive experience, create genuine intimacy, spark new friendships, and prototype forms of collective life you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else.
All Whimsy Lab events are donation-based. You will have an opportunity to contribute during or at the end of the evening based on what the experience was worth to you. Attendance is capped at 30 people at the door. You may bring a friend.
Want a guaranteed place? Arrive at 6:00 PM and help us set the room. Message Sara or Geof. to claim a setup spot.
Hosted by Blank Space, in partnership with Whimsy Lab.
Whimsy Lab is a production of the Whimsy Collective, a monthly gathering of Asheville experience designers. Interested in joining to dream up what comes next? Talk with us at the end of the event.
