The next generation of innovators and thinkers will come from a balance of practical skills, academics, arts, and culture. How can we encourage our children to think outside the box? To have fun while they learn and to think differently? The NCPA Head of Theatre and Film, Bruce Guthrie, gives his guide to keeping culture as part of your everyday diet. If you are what you eat, the culture you consume is reflected in your thinking and behaviour. A talk/discussion with Bruce Guthrie, Head of Theatre & Film, NCPA Bruce Guthrie is an award-winning theatre director and producer, currently the Head of Theatre and Film at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai. His extensive directing portfolio includes Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, Sea Wall, Constellations, RENT: 20th Anniversary Production, and Man to Man. His notable collaborations include The Last Mermaid with Charlotte Church, Bakersfield Mist starring Kathleen Turner and Ian McDiarmid, and Stories by Heart with John Lithgow at the Lyttelton National Theatre. Guthrie is committed to youth theatre development, exemplified by his role in launching Connections India, a youth theatre festival in association with the National Theatre, UK. His production credits include the award-winning Kalgitura, Love and Information, Lungs, and The Gentlemen`s Club at Soho Theatre. In addition to his directing and producing work, Guthrie serves on the advisory board of the Guildford School of Acting. He has also been the Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales, directing productions like The Caucasian Chalk Circle and Romeo & Juliet. Beyond theatre, he has contributed to significant concert events, including HRH The Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Celebration. Guthrie trained as an actor at the Guildford School of Acting and developed his directing skills at the National Theatre Studio, mentored by distinguished directors such as Sir Richard Eyre and Sam Mendes.
