“Where Are You Originally From?”. The artist, River Koelo, investigates the human body, identities, and standards. All paintings show the “immigrant body”, disfigured, out of order and logic, which are reconfigured in the imagination and in the eyes of those who experience the work.

“Where Are You From Originally?” by River Koelo:

“Where Are You From Originally?” presents a new series of paintings inspired by my experience as an immigrant and how we respond to questions that can influence our feeling of belonging to a new place or social group.

In this research, I propose to return the question to the public, raising questions regarding it, as I believe that we are all subject to playing the role of immigrants and natives at some point. In the paintings of this series, the human figure is presented as an “immigrant body”, disfigured, out of order and logic, with different faces and forms that are molded and reconfigured in the others interpretation, according to their knowledge and pre concepts.

When asked about my place of birth, sometimes it feels like I'm not enough as a singular, unique body, representing only my personal history. I therefore understand that, regardless of my individuality, the revelation of my country of origin can justify my qualities or defects and influence the way I am perceived and assimilated.

I would like to paint our social and physical body in a nontraditional way, to propose different views and perceptions about others and ourselves. My work questions beauty standards through skin color and body shapes, thinking about the way it affects our representation in society. I make use of digital and traditional mixed media using experimental brushes and tools to create lines and textures that evoke feelings, emotions and nature. Identity, self-consciousness and displacement are the core of my subject matter.

River Koelo is a New York City based Brazilian mixed media artist. His work navigates binaries in search of in-betweenness, investigating the human body within constructions of identity, social space and beauty standards.

“De Onde Você é Originalmente?” apresenta uma série de pinturas inspiradas na minha experiência como imigrante e em como respondemos a questões que podem influenciar em nosso sentimento de pertencimento a um novo local ou grupo social.

Nesta pesquisa proponho devolver e despertar questionamentos sobre a pergunta ao público, pois acredito que todos estamos sujeitos a exercer o papel do imigrante e do nativo em algum momento.

Nas pinturas desta série, a figura humana é apresentada como um “corpo imigrante”, desconfigurado, fora de ordem e de lógica, com faces e formas diversas que se moldam e se reconfiguram na interpretação do outro sobre o que representamos de acordo com seus conhecimentos e preconceitos.

Ao ser questionado sobre meu lugar de nascimento, sinto por vezes que não sou suficiente como um corpo singular, único, representante da minha própria história pessoal. Entendo assim que, independentemente da minha individualidade, a revelação do meu país de origem pode justificar minhas qualidades ou defeitos e influenciar na maneira como sou recebido e assimilado.

Busco pintar o corpo social e físico de uma forma não tradicional, propor diferentes visões e percepções sobre os outros e sobre nós mesmos. Meu trabalho questiona os padrões de beleza por meio da cor da pele e das formas do corpo, pensando na forma como isso afeta nossa representação na sociedade. Eu faço uso de mídia mista digital e tradicional usando pincéis e ferramentas experimentais para criar linhas e texturas que evocam sentimentos, emoções e natureza. Identidade, autoconsciência e deslocamento são o núcleo do meu tema de pesquisa.

River Koelo é um artista brasileiro residente em Nova York. Seu trabalho navega por binarismo em busca do "meio", investigando o corpo humano nas construções de identidade, espaço social e padrões de beleza.
