When the Personal, Professional, and Political Collide: A symposium for therapists practicing in today's socio-political climate
It's no secret that the current political environment is having a significant impact on our clients - and on us. But when and how do we talk about it with our clients? And what do we do with our own emotional reactions? In this half-day workshop, we will provide therapists with a safe and supportive space in which to raise concerns, ask questions and share best practices for navigating these challenges. Dr. Terri Bly, licensed psychologist at LynLake Centers for WellBeing, will facilitate the conversation.
We will also be joined by Conscious Healing Counselingβs Briana Colton, an expert on vicarious trauma and the use of art therapy to heal from it, as well as Kathy Flaminio and Chrissy Mignogna from movemindfully, who will lead us through through simple mind-body practices designed to help us emotionally regulate and remain fully present so that we can help our clients do the same.
Coffee and a light lunch will be provided.
Possible topics for discussion include (but are not limited to):
- Self-disclosure related to political views and opinions on current events
- How to help our clients when they face ongoing threats to their safety and well-being
- Managing our emotions in-session when our own safety and well-being feel threatened by external events, in order to hold space for our clients
- What to do when your clientsβ political views and values are vastly different from your own
- How to recognize and address symptoms of vicarious trauma in yourself and your clients
This symposium has not been pre-approved for CEUs, and while our hope is that it will qualify for CEUs with each licensing board, we cannot guarantee approval. However, we will provide all participants with a certificate of attendance, as well as an outline of the event with the information necessary to submit to your respective board for possible CE approval.
