Earls Court Gallery is pleased to present When The Lights Come ON, a solo exhibition featuring the urban-impressionistic oil pastel artworks by Aleda O’Connor. On view from October 9 – November 15, 2025, Aleda O'Connor explores the effects of light and shadows on urban structures. Glowingly, this series showcase urbanscapes atmospherically, rather than depicting buildings with clear and realistic precision.
Aleda O’Connor utilizes the oil pastels’ mark making ability to capture her observations of light’s affects and subtleties on city structures. She uses every imaginable mark-making technique— from layering to cross hatching, to blending and scratching— to depict the buildings in an array of impressionistic colours. This method creates atmospheric urban landscapes, which portrays multi-dwelling units and structures of industry as warm hospitable places; they no longer boast hard edges. These urban places become dreamlike dwellings captured from her observations of when the lights come on in the depths of a city.
When The Lights Come On will be on view in the main gallery at 215 Ottawa Street North, Hamilton. Earls Court Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. All artworks will also be available to view and purchase online upon installation.
