In 1977, college graduates Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) share a contentious car ride from Chicago to New York, during which they argue about whether men and women can ever truly be strictly platonic friends. Ten years later, Harry and Sally meet again at a bookstore, and in the company of their respective best friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), attempt to stay friends without sex becoming an issue between them.
The only film in our Nora-vember series that Ephron didn’t direct, When Harry Met Sally… was her first attempt at comedy. Not a bad debut. Ephron had been a reporter for the New York Post and an Esquire columnist for years — in fact she wrote a draft of the script for All the President’s Men with her husband at the time, journalist Carl Bernstein. But after the emotionally draining projects of Silkwood (about a whistleblower at a nuclear facility who dies under suspicious circumstances) and Heartburn (a semi-autobiographical rendering of her marriage to Bernstein) back to back, it must have felt good to switch gears. A series of meetings and interviews with director Rob Reiner turned into her assembling, adapting and remixing his personal history and love life into material for Harry. And you can thank Reiner’s second wife, Michelle, for the ending!
