This presentation explores the complex intersection of eating disorders (EDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs), highlighting their shared risk factors, overlapping neurobiological pathways, and high co-morbidity rates. Using a trauma-informed, culturally attuned lens, it examines the role of stigma, bias, diet culture, and systemic barriers that often prevent accurate diagnosis and integrated care. Participants will learn evidence-based approaches for screening, assessment, and treatment, and gain practical strategies for navigating the friction that can arise between ED and SUD treatment philosophies. Through case examples and current research, this session emphasizes the need for collaborative, whole-person, interdisciplinary care to improve outcomes and reduce mortality for individuals with co-occurring disorders.
