The theme of the exhibit is “When Birds Return”, referencing the lives of both sisters, migrating between Lithuania and US. Just as birds in the Spring, they meet quickly and separate again, sometimes in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in distant New York. Images of birds, dominating in this exhibit, symbolize their connection across the Atlantic Ocean.
The exhibition will feature ceramic works in porcelain – decorative wall hanging sculptures and dishes with bird images by Asta Bubliene. The artist works with porcelain, a material that attracts her with its white surface, which makes underglazes and glazes look brighter than if using a darker clay body. Asta carves delicate thin lines in clay surface, fills the lines with blue or black underglaze, which she later cleans off. Dark color only stays inside the carved lines, giving an impression of an ink line on paper. This technique requires a lot of attention and time, but also rewards both, creatively and aesthetically. Birds, various creatures, forest flowers, plants and herbs show up in Asta’s work. The wild nature of Lithuania is artist's main inspiration.
Textile works by Eglė Kumpikaite, presented in this exhibition, also showcase bird motifs. Fabrics have been weaved with industrial jacquard weaving looms from natural linen and wool fibers. Such fiber composition is new, because two different natural fibers – plant based (linen) and animal based (wool) – are being combined in one fabric. Fabric structure is double layered. In the first layer linen warp intertwines with wool weft, the second layer is purely from linen. This structure is innovative because, even though the linen layer is denser, its threads are more twisted than those of the wool layer. This effect gives the fabric softness, fluffiness and texture. Mechanical softening was used for finishing. The fabrics have been dyed with plant based dyes, using different parts of various plants. Such dyeing is unique and not always predictable. The fabrics shown are well suited for use in interior design for bedspreads, throws, window treatments, etc.
Exhibition “When Birds Return” connects different materials and different means of expression, which allow both artists to convey their own views about surrounding natural world and migration of both, birds and people.
