Linton is a versatile artist well known to audiences at The Plant. In 2021, she organized the UnityFest Concert, featuring local musicians and music students, to help bring the community together in the aftermath of Covid-19. In 2022 and 2023, at events to support the missions of the Chatham County Arts Council and the Ukrainian Association of North Carolina, Linton combined readings from her memoir with newly composed music to create an enhanced experience for listeners. More recently, she participated in a Poetry @ The Plant event with the theme of women’s empowerment, co-sponsored by the Women’s Advocacy Initiative.
Growing up in a small town in eastern North Carolina, Linton imagined having adventures in far away places. She started singing before she could read, and wrote her first songs and poems as a teenager. Her earliest influences were classical music, musical theater, and vocal & big band jazz. Inspired by folk singers of the 60s & 70s, she joined with two other high school students to form her first band. For over four decades, she has toured with numerous groups in the U.S. and Europe, and recorded two albums, The Secret and Sparkle Plenty.
Linton’s memoir, Hurricanes and Other Natural Disasters, is a collection of essays, songs, and poems that reflect on her pivotal experiences as set in the context of culture and place. When asked how she developed her “voice,” Linton explained, “We all have very private thoughts and feelings that only surface indirectly. It’s that mysterious territory that I love to explore. As an artist, I decide how much to reveal about myself, my loved ones, and even the villains in my life. If I dare to bare my own secrets, readers are more likely to connect emotionally with my writing. And perhaps realize they are not alone in dealing with the difficult parts of life.”
Kim Caraganis, guitar & vocals
Elizabeth Haddix, double bass & vocals
Dave Smith, lead guitar.
The Secret and Sparkle Plenty can be purchased in CD format at the concert on March 27th. Sparkle Plenty is also available for streaming on Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.
