Wheel Level III — Serving Platter

July 13th - July 27th, @5:30-7:30PM
Serving Platter — Intermediate Wheel Throwing 3 sessions: 1 throwing, 1 trimming & altering, 1 glazing
Push your throwing practice into larger-scale work by making a full serving platter from up to 10 lbs of clay. You'll learn to manage more clay on the wheel than you may be used to, throwing wide and low while maintaining even walls and a strong base. From there you'll refine the form through trimming and hands-on altering, and finish with a glaze session focused on the unique challenges of large, flat surfaces.
Session 1 — ThrowingWork with up to 10 lbs of clay to throw a wide, low platter form. Focus on centering a larger mass, opening with control, and pulling an even wall without losing the rim. Learn how throwing a platter differs structurally from smaller forms and how to set yourself up for successful trimming later.
Session 2 — Trimming & AlteringTrim your leather-hard platter, establishing a foot-ring that balances and complements the form. Then explore alterations — adjusting the rim, adding handles, or reshaping into an oval or square— to bring personality to the piece before it dries completely.
Session 3 — GlazingReturn to your bisque-fired platter and work through glaze strategies suited to a large, functional surface. Cover considerations for food-safe glazing, even application across a wide base, and techniques like pouring and wax resist that work well at this scale.
