What you need to know about your soil - Detroit Queer Garden Network
About this Event
So much of life begins in the soil, yet few of us stop to consider what it is, how it works, or how much life it holds.
Join the Detroit Queer Garden Network and soil educator Jake Todd, a Texas Tech graduate, for an outdoor, hands-on exploration of soil. Together, we’ll examine a soil pit dug in a Detroit yard and learn how soil conditions influence plant health and growth.
During this 60-minute session, Jake will guide us through:
- Soil texture: how sand and clay affect water flow and nutrient retention
- Soil structure: how strong and weak structures influence drainage and root growth
- Gleyed soil colors: what they can reveal about a high water table
- Bulk density: how soil compaction affects water flow, roots, and erosion
- Coarse fragments: how rocks and other materials may limit root development
Come ready to look closely, ask questions, and discover the living world beneath our feet. This event will take place outdoors.

Community potluck, social time, and chill garden vibes
Bring a dish or drink to share if you are able. No previous gardening or soil science experience is required.
