What we were left to see… A one-person show by Michele Brody at AAA3A

For What we were left to see… Brody will be exhibiting participating community members’ stories along with window paintings in the forms of hand bound sculptural books, a self-published zine, fluttering paper quilts, framed letter sized pulp-paintings and a handful of large-scale handmade paper sheets of pulp painted versions of participants’ windows at almost life-sized. This final version to re-create for the viewer a vicariously shared experience of how each participant framed What they were left to see… while managing through the pandemic. 

She started this project first over email and social media, but then utilized a City Artist Corp grant to host a series of safe, one-on-one Tea Time Talks under her Tea-Tent of many stories throughout Mott Haven at the Mottley Café, La Morada Restaurant, and at AAA3A artist-run space. Participants shared their stories through conversion and by writing onto specially prepared note-papers made from tea-stained tea filters to be hung as part of the paper quilts Brody has been collecting since 2007 for her community engagement project Reflections in Tea. 

This project is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the Bronx Council on the Arts.

In compliance with the New York City mandate, all visitors over the age of 12 must show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to enter AAA3A, and masks are required. Please pre-register for a timed ticket to limit the number of attendees for safe social distancing.
