Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation.
About this Event

At fifteen, Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition winning Constitutional debates in American Legion halls across the country. Decades later she returns to that arena to trace how the document shaped four generations of women in her own family — and to ask, with humor, fury, and tenderness, what it actually promises the people living under it. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and one of the most acclaimed American plays of the last decade.

Four Heidis, one Constitution. Four actors share the title role, each taking the stage on different performances — so no two nights are the same. The Constitution is a living document argued by many voices, and our staging puts that idea in the room with you. Check your date to see who's carrying the gavel.

Theatre that gives back. This production partners with four Chicago community organizations — one for each cause at the play's heart: reproductive rights, voting rights, protection from gender-based violence, and immigrant justice — and donates a share of every ticket sold. Buy a ticket, and you're part of that.

Content advisory. Frank discussion of abortion, domestic and sexual violence, and immigration, drawn in part from the playwright's own family history and handled with care. Recommended for ages 14+; younger audiences welcome at a parent or guardian's discretion.

Running time: approximately 100 minutes. Check individual listings for talkback nights and partner events.
