What Lessons Can We Still Learn from the Vietnam War?

Please join the Military and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee as we explore a few relevant lessons derived from the Vietnam War. From the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza today, the specter of the Vietnam War looms large. In fact, 2024 will see the Democratic National Convention again hosted in Chicago. At the same time, there doesn’t seem to be an end to the protests against the war in Gaza. Questions abound as to whether Chicago will see a repeat of the violent 1968 protests against the war in Vietnam that occurred during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. What, if anything, can we learn today from the experience of the Vietnam War? Our discussion will be moderated by acclaimed documentary host and producer, network, and major news anchor Bill Kurtis and one of our three guest panelists will be U.S. Army, Vietnam War veteran, and Medal of Honor Recipient—Allen J. Lynch.

In addition to our discussion, we will introduce a fifteen-minute trailer for the documentary, Vietnam Changed My Life. The trailer will be introduced by the director and producer of the documentary, George B. Bogdanich. Vietnam Changed My Life is told by Vietnam veterans who vividly describe their experience of combat in an unpopular war and the many challenges they faced coming home.
