“What is Public Art?” Community Convo & Kick-Off Event

Join us for a community conversation on how the question of “What is public art” will be uniquely explored at Alcove over the next 3 months. This the kickoff event with a panel discussion that includes a local street artist, musician and a mutual-aid art initiatives! This conversation will be moderated by Matias Martinez.

We are so excited to host a variety of programming over the Fall 2024 that includes window case activations and conversations exploring “What is Public Art?” in partnership with Calgary Arts Development.

Light snacks & refreshments will be served!

This will be an all-ages event. The event is pay what you can! Suggested $5 - $10 to support moderator fees and supplies.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR:

Indigenous Latin American artist Matias Martinez is of Mapuche/Maya descent based in Calgary, Alberta. Martinez’s work combines glass, paintings, and social practices, driven by my identity and curiosity, With themes of identity, love, memories, and commonality. His organic style is influenced by emotions, daily experiences, and music. Martinez’s use a rhizomatic approach, adapting tools and ideas based on momentary/built up inspiration. My recent work explores rediscovering my Indigenous identity, inspired by ancient stories, ways of life, and myths. Through contemporary art, I aim to highlight my Mapuche And Maya culture and storytelling.

Alcove Centre for the Arts (alcoveartscentre.ca) is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, AB which aims to make art more accessible and promote a vibrant local arts industry. We curate and cultivate community art spaces for Calgarians to engage in art and creativity while building a platform for emerging local artists.

Alcove is a Recreational Art Space open to the public providing free art supplies and instruments to stimulate creativity. The space also acts as a gathering place for workshops, community events, and social meetups. Come visit and get creative!
