What is "Post-Marxism?" Is it a correction of the Marxist tradition in a more radical direction, or is it a rejection of that tradition? This lecture will explain how one might get the impression that it is the former, but the reality is more complicated. It will argue that post-Marxism was a way for left wing scholars to adapt to the intellectual winds of postmodernism. Whereas postmodern scholars explicitly rejected both of the emancipatory ideologies of the 19th and 20th centuries with equal measure--liberalism and Marxism--post-Marxists insisted that they were carrying forth the emancipatory promise of the latter in a radicalized form. Indeed, critical theory is normally taught in a linear fashion, demonstrating a progressive trajectory from a vulgar Marxism of the past to a more enlightened post-Marxism of the present. This talk challenges that narrative and argues that Marxism remains indispensable for an emancipatory research program.------------------------------------------------
