Sponsored by The Friends of the LibraryBecause it cannot be observed in the same way that a scientist can observe plants or planets or, for that matter, brain cells, it seems that consciousness will always remain something of a mystery, a sealed chamber that can only be seen from the inside. While the question of how consciousness arises in the physical world, or how matter produces mind, remains unanswered, there is a whole history of attempts to understand consciousness from the inside, as it were, to answer the basic question, "What is consciousness?" It was raised by Rene Descartes in the seventeenth century, and it has since been addressed by philosophers and thinkers from Sigmund Freud to Jean-Paul Sartre to Roger Penrose and others whose ideas will be discussed in this presentation.
Speaker: Albert B. Fernandez is Professor Emeritus of Cultural History and Humanities at North Central College.
