In 1846, California's indigenous population was about 150,000; by 1873, it had declined 80%, to only 30,000. What happened? California history celebrates the gold rush of 1849 and the migration of Euro-Americans that followed but speaks little of the destruction that was visited upon indigenous Californians. Our speaker UCLA Associate Professor Benjamin Madley will examine who did the killing, the involvement of State and federal officials, and how taxpayer dollars supported the violence.
During the 2021-2022 academic year, Prof. Madley will be a Dana and David Dornsife Fellow at the Huntington Library in Arcadia, California.
Come early to socialize, the meeting will start at 12:30.
