Time: 3 - 4.30pm
Address: Art At Sumner Hub, Sumner Hub 57 Nayland Street Sumner (old police station). Walk through the black side gate and look to your right. Go up the steps and knock on the blue/green door.
Suitability: Whanau (families) 5 yrs up. Children to be accompanied if under 7
Number of spots available: 10 in total
Cost: Koha ($15)pp suggested. This will be donated to The National Collective of Independent Women's Refuges (Charities Number: CC25991). Other funding supported by the Sumner Community Residents and Hub
What to bring: Closed drink bottle if you are likely to get thirsty
Workshop Description
Aimed at whānau this will be a workshop that will make memories that twinkle as brightly as the whetū themselves! Make a garland together as a family or as an individual.
Matariki whetū will be fired and available for collection 3 weeks later from the Sumner Hub.
NB# Max of 9 stars (family or individual)
Matariki is a cluster of stars and signals te mātahi o te tau (the new year) in line with the maramataka (lunar calendar). It is a special time of year in the Māori calendar and the importance of learning about Matariki can be done in a variety of ways such as art and craft.
In this pottery workshop as we craft, we'll share stories and traditions surrounding Matariki, deepening our connection to this special time of year and the rich culture it celebrates. Hang your Matariki clay whetū bunting at home as a way to remember this special time for Aotearoa.
Due to the small space please make sure before booking that your child(ren) is(are) OK to be left on their own at Sumner Hub and collected at the end.
