About this Event

All Heartland families are invited to join us for a whale watch adventure in Monterey Bay! September is known for calm waters and warm temperatures (though of course this is not guaranteed). Monterey Bay has a spectacular diversity of birds and mammals – let’s see what we can spot! This trip will be led by a marine biologist who will fully narrate and answer any questions you may have. Humpback whales are common at this time of year, as are several species of dolphins and porpoises.

Whale watching is a wonderfully educational activity- students see in real life whales, dolphins, birds, and fishes feeding, resting, moving, and carrying out the business of being alive and part of our spectacularly rich marine ecosystem. They learn and ask questions about adaptations that help them survive, and how energy flows through this ecosystem. We highly recommend you explore this website https://gowhales.com before you go, as it is full of educational information, and statistics regarding what types of marine mammals (and other creatures) have been sighted over the years.

Warning: This is a 3 hour trip, and some people (in my experience taking people on these boats) do experience seasickness. Pregnant women should not come, as sea sickness can be harder on them than on others, and the boat may have to cut the trip short if a pregnant woman is experiencing sea sickness. (The boat does not turn back for non pregnant people).

We encourage families to turn in a sample that is linked to the field trip that you attended during your next learning period. It helps to ensure that we can continue to provide these trips and their educational value.

Heartland field trips are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If your student will be attending with another family, please indicate this when you register your student and let the field trip host know once you complete your registration.

**To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, please do not attend a field trip if you, your student(s), or anyone in your household is ill or showing possible signs of illness.**

Please read our refund policy!

Refunds will not be given for any reason. As a courtesy, if you are sick or unable to attend a field trip, please contact the teacher that planned the event to let them know so they do not wait at the venue for you. You may not send a different family in your place as we will not have a waiver for them.

May I pay using my student's planning amount?

Yes! You can pay for your student's ticket and one chaperone ticket with your student's planning amount. You will need to choose the free Heartland Student ticket or free Chaperone ticket option. The actual ticket price will be manually debited from your student's planning amount. (One chaperone ticket per family per field trip may be purchased with student planning amounts.)

If the free Heartland Student ticket or Free Heartland Chaperone ticket is chosen and there are not sufficient funds to cover the cost of the ticket you will be responsible for paying for the ticket out of pocket. It is the responsibility of each family to know their current balance. This information is available in Procurify. Take into account all pending orders. Please keep in mind that pending orders may cause your balance to change. Please make sure that you have sufficient funds before purchasing tickets for field trips.

Whenever possible we will list the option of paying out of pocket for field trips by using a credit card through Eventbrite. Any additional adults and/or non-Heartland enrolled students will need to use this option when purchasing tickets. (Eventbrite charges a small fee in order to offer this service.)

Does this trip have any height, weight, and/or age restrictions? All ages are welcome. Participants may experience seasickness. No, strongly recommend pregnant women don’t go due to seasickness possibility.

What are the check-in procedures? Meet Shauna on dock in front of Monterey Bay whale-watch Center at 3:30 PM.

Is there on-site parking available? There is a huge parking lot 201 Washington Street off of Del Monte. $2 per hour.

Can we pack snacks or lunch for this event or field trip? YES, also a galley on board- can pay cash or credit card to buy snacks and drinks
