Born and raised in Northland, Meka Mauriri left Taranaki to pursue a career in the Royal New Zealand Navy, serving for six and a half years before embarking on an 11-month backpacking journey across South and Central America. Upon returning to Aotearoa, he sought to deepen his connection to his culture, moving to Gisborne to study Māori wood carving for five years.
Now back in Taranaki, Meka is dedicated to teaching and carving for his people, using his craft to honour Māori ancestors who can no longer share their stories. Through his work, he brings history and whakapapa to life, ensuring these narratives continue to be passed down through generations.
