Alison Terndrup
"Dazzlingly Brilliant" The Ottoman Imperial Portrait in the Nineteenth Century
The talk will examine how portraits of the Ottoman sultan, from jewel-like miniatures to monumental oils to lithographic prints, shaped ideas of presence, authority, and sovereignty in the mid-nineteenth century.
Drawing on poetry, newspapers, and diplomatic accounts, learn how these dazzling images reimagined visibility itself as a tool of power in rapidly globalizing world.
