Wet-Lab DNA Molecular Biology Workshop (PCR and Gel Electrophoresis)
Schedule
Sat Sep 07 2024 at 01:00 pm to 05:00 pm
Location
Counter Culture Labs | Oakland, CA
About this Event
Welcome to the DNA Molecular Biology Workshop! Join us at Counter Culture Labs for a hands-on experience learning two fundamental techniques: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis.
In this class, participants will make copies of DNA with PCR and separate DNA strands by size using gel electrophoresis. We will also cover molecular cloning concepts, in particular, how to use plasmids to copy longer strands of DNA with microbial machinery.
Equipment we will use include a Nanodrop to measure the amount of template DNA to be used in PCR, a thermocycler to achieve the appropriate temperatures for each stage of PCR, a gel electrophoresis module to segregate distinct sizes of DNA, and a gel viewer to illuminate DNA bands.
The workshop fee is $200
This covers instruction and the materials and equipment used in the class.
Required lab attire for safety: Long pants and closed-toed shoes.
About the Instructor
This workshop is taught by Anthony Neil Tan, an AgTech professional [UC Berkeley bachelor of science in Bioengineering]. He is currently an independent research scientist and his projects center on optimizing the cultivation of high-value plants via plant genetic engineering and molecular biology. His portfolio ranges from designing a plant growth chamber that won a national NASA contest to developing new plant genetic engineering tools at the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute.
